It's amazing what good winning can do. Suddenly, I didn't want to punch him in the face anymore.
Shane and I have always gotten along; we've never been friends. You don't have to be friends to work together. All you have to do is get the car across the finish line every week. Which is what we've done, while otherwise disagreeing and arguing and trying to spend as little social time together as possible.
But Indianapolis was different. It's always different, but particularly this race. We knew we were just one step shy of the top. We both wanted that win. We both wanted to break that streak of being good, but not good enough. And it just felt like this was going to be the time. It was the car. It was starting alongside Scott and Will. It was having Frank there and not waiting for him to turn up after. Everything felt right.
I'll never forget the sound of Shane's voice in my ear in those last couple laps. Keeping me calm, telling me that I could do it. Then once I got around Will, he shut up and let me drive. When it mattered most, in the biggest moment of my life, he trusted me. He had my back. He made me laugh.
It's not like we've suddenly become similar people, and we'll never be best friends, but all it took was one good day to change our minds. I won't punch him anymore. I even invited him over for dinner. It's a start.
